The Old Testament plays a foundational role in the development of both Christianity and Judaism. As such, the Old Testament has also played a very formative role in the historical development of European and western civilization. Despite this, however, it remains largely unknown or even misunderstood. The purpose of this study object, is to introduce beginner students to the way in which the narratives of the Old Testament communicate a theological message that remains today as the starting point for Christian theology.
This study object looks specifically at the first 11 chapters of the first book of the Old Testament, the book of Genesis. The aim is to see the theological message being communicated through the recurring patterns of the text concerning the nature of God, the nature of us as human beings, our alienation from each other and the hope of salvation that is key to the message of the Bible.
